What Is BPC-157?

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound 157) is a synthetic peptide of 15 amino acids, derived from a protective protein naturally present in human gastric juice. Discovered in the early 1990s by Croatian researchers, it earned its name from the striking stability and tissue-protective effects it showed in laboratory models — it survives stomach acid, which almost no peptide does.

Its research profile centers on repair: animal studies report accelerated healing of tendons, ligaments, muscle, nerve tissue and the gut lining, apparently through upregulating growth-factor receptors, promoting new blood-vessel formation (angiogenesis) and modulating the nitric-oxide system. It became the most widely used 'healing peptide' in the fitness and biohacking world largely on the strength of this animal literature.

Reported side effects in community use are mild and infrequent: injection-site irritation, occasional nausea or dizziness. Because formal human trials are lacking, the honest statement is that its human safety profile is uncharacterized rather than proven safe. Theoretical concerns about angiogenesis (blood-vessel growth) mean anyone with cancer history should avoid it.

Legal & approval status

Not approved for human use anywhere. In the US, the FDA placed BPC-157 in the most restrictive compounding category in 2023, which pushed clinics toward the arginate-salt analog PDA. Sold legally as a research chemical; banned in competitive sport by WADA.
