MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded not in the nucleus but in mitochondrial DNA — one of a small class of 'mitochondrial-derived peptides' discovered in the 2010s. It acts as a metabolic signal, activating AMPK, the cellular energy-stress pathway that exercise itself triggers.

That mechanism earned it the 'exercise mimetic' label: rodent studies show improved insulin sensitivity, endurance and resistance to diet-induced obesity. Human data is early — a small Japanese trial and observational work linking MOTS-c levels to metabolic health.
